A sustainable luxury resort in the Alps

The next few years will see the development of a luxury tourist resort in Andermatt in the canton of Uri. The Andermatt Swiss Alps will meet high standards in terms of comfort and sustainability.

Aiming to be carbon neutral

This is a visionary project on a grand scale. The next few years will see the development of a luxury resort in the remote Urserntal in the canton of Uri. Five hotels, some 25 villas, numerous flats and leisure facilities are scheduled to be built on a 21 hectare site. The Egyptian investor, Samih Sawiris, would like the project to integrate well into the existing infrastructure. He also wants the development and operation of the resort to be sustainable and aims to create a carbon neutral resort.

Environmentally friendly golf course

Environmental organisations are involved in the design of the golf course – showing how seriously the project takes environmental concerns. The plan is to create large ecological areas for displaced flora and fauna. No pesticides and fertilisers are to be used.

Planning which involves input from many parties

Basler & Hofmann produced the environmental impact report for the project and had overall responsibility for the area layout planning. This entailed the production of six design plans involving input from agencies, organisations, experts, NGOs and local people. They had to provide solutions for all kinds of requirements. The aim was to come up with a scheme which would meet with general acceptance and approval. The fact that all stakeholders have been heavily involved has paid off. When the project was submitted for public consultation not a single objection was made.
