Chemical risks at a glance

Chemical plants and the transportation of hazardous liquids pose risks for both people and the environment. The only people who can make the right decisions are those who know the risks and are able to assess them.  Basler & Hofmann has set up a risk register which a number of Swiss cantons can use as an invaluable decision-making tool.

Risks at a glance

The risk register assesses the risks posed to both people and the environment, coming from chemical plants, pipelines and the transportation of hazardous liquids. The register displays the results in a geographic information system. This allows cantons to assess at a glance where the risks are and where they may come into conflict with future construction projects.

Linking expertise with GIS know-how

The geographic information system contains a lot of data:  information about the chemical plants and the hazardous liquids, population statistics, groundwater and hydrographic maps and terrain models. This data only becomes useful if it is made available to those who know how to use it. This requires the network of knowledge that security experts, natural scientists and geographical information experts possess.  The result is an intelligent system that provides an important basis for making decisions.
