A major relief road for the Zurich conurbation
Zurich’s Western Bypass has been one of Switzerland’s major road projects. A key element in the bypass is the Zurich South Triangle. Basler & Hofmann planned and designed the Triangle, working closely with many other stakeholders, giving careful consideration to the natural environment.
A major relief road for Zurich and its surrounding area
The Zurich Western Bypass, which is 10.6 kilometres long, closes a gap in Switzerland’s national road network. The Western Bypass – together with the new A4 motorway - now provides fast access from Zurich to central Switzerland and takes through-traffic away from the city and its outlying areas. One of the key structures on the Western Bypass is the Zurich South Triangle which includes the canton’s largest bridge structure, a revitalised flood plain and a 550 metre long stretch of covered motorway.
A holistic approach
Major construction work is being carried out in the urban area and in the basin of the River Sihl, which requires a holistic design approach. Basler & Hofmann employs specialists from a wide range of disciplines who work together closely on the project. Specialists from the company working on the relief road include those from traffic planning, road and bridge engineering, environmental remediation, soil conservation, hydraulic engineering, ecology, noise protection and land surveying. Although this is a large scale structure, the design nevertheless, takes the needs of the environment and residential areas into account.
