The Port Elizabeth Stadium
World class infrastructure
FIFA has high expectations of the stadiums which will stage the matches of the 2010 Football World Cup and the Confederations Cup. Basler & Hofmann has been in charge of the building services strategy for the stadiums in South Africa.
High expectations
The stadiums to be used for World Cup and Confederations Cup matches will have a standard of infrastructure which is far superior to that currently used in most sporting venues. Almost every stadium must upgrade its technical equipment in time for these major football events. Basler & Hofmann has a track record in this sector, having provided the technical specifications for the stadiums used in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The team also designed the building services strategy for the South African stadiums that hosted the 2009 Confederations Cup.
International collaboration
Basler & Hofmann was responsible for designing the building services needed for all four stadiums in terms of power, heating, air-conditioning and sanitary systems. It also organised tendering and supervised the installation phase. This included, for example, upgrading the floodlights to 2,500 lux for high definition TV transmission and providing a media centre equipped with computer work stations and internet access for 1,000 journalists. It was a challenging task, but an international team involving a large number of people working to a tight timescale was able to deliver effective solutions. The Confederations Cup was a success. Our next test will be the 2010 Wold Cup.
