The Rynächt underpass

Storage of materials
High speed to the Gotthard Base Tunnel
The approach line to the Gotthard base tunnel, the longest tunnel in the world, is scheduled for completion in 2017. The route in the canton Uri runs through a narrow and densely used valley. Our engineers are dealing with the challenge of ensuring that the surrounding environment is affected as little as possible.
A major construction project
The approach line north of the Gotthard base tunnel links the 57-kilometre long base tunnel to SBB’s existing network. This is a major project presenting technical and logistical challenges. Rail operations on the adjoining main line must be maintained during the construction period. Approximately 2.3 million tons of construction material has to be temporarily stored in a confined area so that it is readily available at the time it’s needed.
Strict environmental requirements
The environmental precautions being taken are equally challenging. The soil has to be carefully removed and stored on a temporary basis. Alternative habitats have already been created for rare species and water courses will be restored to their natural state while construction work is in progress. Many purpose built structures allow wild animals to cross the route safely.
Joined-up thinking
Construction in open spaces means striking a balance between a wide range of uses and needs. We rely on engineers not only for their technical expertise but also for their ability to think and act in a coordinated way.
