Railway projects are the real passion of Matthias Schmid. In his degree course in civil engineering at ETH Zurich, he specialised in transport systems and geotechnical engineering. He joined Basler & Hofmann in 2013 straight from university as a project engineer in the field of railway construction. In 2017 he used the expertise gained in the first years of his career to advance his qualifications by obtaining a Certificate of Advanced Studies in railway engineering and technology with a main focus on track systems at the College of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg. Today, Matthias Schmid looks after complex railway projects throughout the whole of Switzerland. Whether for standard or narrow-gauge railway lines, track superstructure or formation layers: in Matthias Schmid, our rail customers have an experienced project manager by their side to guide them through all phases of the construction process.

What is different about working at Basler & Hofmann?

Depending on the task at hand, the way our project teams are put together will vary. This means that I constantly get the chance to meet new colleagues with different specialist areas of expertise. We learn a lot from each other. That is really rewarding.

What do you find makes a project particularly enjoyable?

When we manage to pool together all the different disciplines to develop the perfect solution for the customer.
