An award for an innovative energy concept

Basler & Hofmann received the Green CIO Award in 2008 for the innovative energy concept deployed at the new headquarters of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin.

The award recognises the input of innovative projects that significantly improve the energy efficiency of IT systems. In the new office building of the Heinrich Böll Foundation the servers are embedded into the building’s environmental system using so-called “cool racks”. In winter heat generated by the servers can be used to heat the building directly. In the summer the servers are kept cool using a highly efficient water-cooling system. This is just one component in a forward-looking energy concept which has been used in the new office building and conference centre in the centre of Berlin. With a primary energy rate of 55.7 kWh/m2NGF*a (corresponding to 27.7 kWh/m2EBF*a in the Minergie standard), the building requires only about half the amount of primary energy as a conventional office building.
