Ovra Solara Magriel large-scale Alpine solar plant

Project overview

Axpo is aiming to build a large-scale Alpine solar plant above Disentis at approximately 2,100 metres above sea level. The plan is to construct a 10-megawatt solar plant across an area of around 80,000 m2, which is equivalent to 10 football pitches. The “Ovra Solara Magriel” plant located on the southern slope of the La Muotta peak will in future supply the mountain railways in the Disentis ski area with green electricity. It is planned that the plant will one day deliver between 14 and 17 gigawatt hours of electricity. An interdisciplinary team from Basler & Hofmann has investigated the feasibility of the project and was appointed general planner. The existing infrastructure of the winter sports and hiking area allows for efficient connection to the power grid. Specific challenges in the project planning include the proximity to local ski slopes and the steep slope location, necessitating sophisticated construction logistics. In October 2023, the residents of Disentis overwhelmingly approved the project. The facility is expected to commence operations in 2025.
