Umwelt Arena: Innovative highlight for photovoltaics
The "Umwelt Arena" in Spreitenbach has been making headlines with its futuristic solar architecture. This ambitious building is imposing both by virtue of its appearance, and also because it has successfully challenged a fundamental principle held by PV planners.

The roof of the "Umwelt Arena" resembles a crystal, with its 33 sub-sections facing skywards in all directions. Photovoltaic specialists initially viewed this very unfavourably; as ideally, all modules should face south. Their amazement was even greater after completion of their calculations as the roof generates 82% of the energy yield of an optimal south-facing surface of the same size. The "Umwelt Arena" has been awarded the European Solar Prize.
