Since 1992, Cornelia Angehrn has been a sought-after specialist at Basler & Hofmann in issues involving environmental chemistry and contaminated sites management at complex contaminated locations. The Doctor of Chemistry evaluates products, especially construction products, with regard to their ecotoxicological characteristics, and provides companies with support in due-diligence issues. Following her studies in Chemistry and Toxicology at the University of Zurich, Cornelia Angehrn focused on the behaviour of contaminants in soil and water in various research positions and appointments in Germany and Australia. This work included, for example, helping to devise basic quality criteria for bodies of water and potable water for the Australian Environment Protection Authority (EPA). The leading expert in environmental chemistry is a member of the Environment and Transport Planning Management Team at Basler & Hofmann.
Finding solutions to complex environmental problems and optimising the utilisation of resources calls for a different, creative approach every time – and this can only be achieved through interdisciplinary teamwork. Witnessing the interaction between various specialists never fails to fascinate me.

      Technical Director Railway Station Building

      Lausanne

      E-mail
From new installations for the cross-city link to the underground railway stations of Lucerne and Geneva Gare Cornavin: without Ralph Bächli, today’s rail traffic would be almost at a standstill. The Civil Engineering graduate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich joined Basler & Hofmann just after leaving university, and soon began gaining experience with very large railway projects in Switzerland. In 1999, he had the opportunity to look into the multifaceted question of how to increase the capacity at Zurich main station – and has not looked back since. To this day, he continues to focus on railway station projects, supervising them at every stage, from the first project sketch right through to execution. He was, for example, responsible for the development of the Bern SBB, Bern RBS, Lausanne and Geneva Gare Cornavin railway stations. At Geneva Gare Cornavin, he was faced with the same question as at Zurich main station, and was able to make a significant contribution to the solution.
The coordination of all aspects, with a view to ensuring that the railway station can continue to function at all times: the building phases are aligned with the requirements of operations, people flows determine the layout, the support structure is oriented towards simple practicability, and all the tricks of special civil engineering come into play.

If a project is approved for development, then I’m in my element. Everything has to fit: the public facilities, the service areas, the station forecourt, the possibilities for transferring to local transport, and the design of access routes to the city. The aim is to achieve a harmonious whole.

Balz Bauer joined Basler & Hofmann in 2011 after completing his civil engineering studies at ETH Zurich, having already completed an internship in structural engineering in 2008. He started his career in structural engineering and bridge construction and has been involved in various challenging projects: As sub-project manager for civil engineering, he is responsible for the new "Mitte" underpass at Berne railway station, which will go into operation in 2027. With the design of the civil engineering structures on the northern access route, he made a major contribution to the AlpTransit Gotthard in the Uri valley. He also has many years of experience in construction management. Balz Bauer's areas of expertise include reinforced concrete and steel structures, the design of complex bridges and infrastructure, and construction sequence planning. Since the beginning of 2020, Balz Bauer has been Head of Bridges at the Zurich site of Basler & Hofmann and a member of the Divisional Management of Bridges and Roads.
The nice thing about my work is to be able to accompany a project from the first sketch on paper to the finished building. The exchange and discussion with the client, works, infrastructure operators and the contractor is varied and challenging.

The moment when, after careful and intensive planning, the first construction machines start to move and the realization of a project starts is always special. Then all the planning work becomes reality.

Jürg Büchler has always found motivation in complex construction projects and leadership roles. The engineer started out in 1986 – newly armed with his degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich – as a project manager in an international planning office in the area of structural engineering and bridge construction. Following a spell in New York, where he worked on airport planning, he returned to Switzerland and took over as CEO of the Central Switzerland subsidiary of a major Swiss engineering firm. In 1997, he became partner and co-owner of PlüssMeyerPartner, a company that he integrated into the Basler & Hofmann Group in 2012. From 2019 to 2020, he was head of the market segment in Central Switzerland on the Executive Board with responsibility for the expansion of Basler & Hofmann in this region. At the end of 2020, he stood down from the Executive Board of Basler & Hofmann in order to have more time for project work. Since September 2020, he has also been a member of the Executive Board of Basler & Hofmann West in the Bern region.
I find the variety and diversity of my work extremely exciting. My role involves complex structural issues spanning a wide range of areas, together with organisation and leadership. This combination constantly creates new challenges that make sure my day-to-day work never becomes routine.

I would probably be a helicopter pilot. This profession – in a similar way to civil engineering – involves close interaction between humans and technology, and the pilot works in a small team with marshallers. Here, too, success depends greatly on each individual team member.

Beat Bürkli is somewhat of an institution at Basler & Hofmann. He was there back in 1987, when the engineering firm was still called PlüssMeyerPartner. He started off as a reinforced concrete draughtsman in Structural Engineering. Early in his career, he started to help out with bridge engineering, and since 2012, he has been a permanent member of that team. It was clear that, in his role as draughtsman, he would also supervise the apprentices. In 2008, the search was on to find a new person to be in charge of vocational training, and Beat Bürkli was selected to be the new “schoolmaster”. “I really enjoy supporting young people on their path through education and training them to become draughters,” he says.
I love the many different aspects of this job. Each project is different – you can see how a building or a bridge is made, from the plans right through to the finished edifice.
I’m always able to contribute to exciting projects. The teams and the atmosphere at work are truly great.

He began his career at a Zurich engineering firm specialising in structural engineering and bridge construction, until his passion for bridges led him to England, where he completed a master’s degree in Bridge Engineering. Since 2011, Roger Dietschweiler has worked as a project manager for engineering structures with Basler & Hofmann. His project track record includes motorway bridges, a 100-year-old natural stone bridge and innovative stressed ribbon bridges for pedestrians. Roger Dietschweiler has been a leading expert in Structural Engineering and a member of the management team for the Structural Engineering and Industrial Buildings departments since 2019.

I like being involved in the early stages of a project when I have the chance to solve problems in a conceptual and holistic way. I also enjoy being there as the project enters its final phase so I can see how the concepts come together to form the finished article.
Something that involved working with my hands – a carpenter, for example. Turning ideas into actual physical objects yourself is fascinating. However, as crafts are not exactly my strong suit, civil engineering is the next best thing.

Ueli Dubach has been a geographic information systems (GIS) specialist ever since the beginning of GIS. Having joined Basler & Hofmann in 1993, he supervised the development and implementation of a spatial data infrastructure for all the utilities of Zollikon, a Zurich municipality. Other municipalities and organisations then followed with similar assignments. Originally a survey draughtsman, Ueli Dubach acquired a broad range of additional knowledge through various advanced-training courses – in data modelling, system configuration and WebGIS development. He regularly also passes on this knowledge within projects and in the context of training for GIS and CAD users. Today, he supervises as a project leader several municipalities and supports junior staff in their mandates.
Interesting and challenging projects that can be completed to the full satisfaction of the client, as well as the mutual trust and good relationships with long-term partners.

Marc-André Dubath is very well acquainted with all things underfoot: when it comes to soil protection, contaminated sites, landfill sites, geotechnical or hydrogeological issues, this rural engineer is a highly sought-after expert. The list of projects he oversees is long, and ranges from soil protection concepts to in situ renovations to dismantling former industrial sites. In his experience, the best solutions arise when all disciplines involved in a project work together from an early stage. “With this holistic approach, environmental concerns can often be addressed without too much extra effort.” Marc-André is also involved in specialist groups such as ChloroNet and trade associations like Baustoffrecycling Schweiz (for the recycling of building materials) and the Association des Géotechniciens et des Géologues Vaudois (Vaud Association of Geotechnicians and Geologists), helping to find solutions that benefit both people and the environment. He joined the Basler & Hofmann team in Lausanne as project manager in 2017.
Exploring the environment around us, knowing that we will never fully understand or control it, therefore having to make decisions even when things are uncertain – and sharing the joy of jointly developing innovative and forward-looking projects in the midst of all this complexity.

Christian Eugster can be entrusted with large-scale projects. For almost 20 years now, the electrical engineer has worked as the overall project manager for operation and security equipment (OSE) for motorways – from the Milchbuck Tunnel in Zurich to the San Bernardino Tunnel. This role involves coordinating communication and information systems, safety and monitoring facilities, control technology and the energy supply. He has also worked on various rail and power plant construction projects. Christian is still fascinated by his work, especially by the moment when a highly complex facility that has been planned and constructed over a number of years finally enters into operation: “It’s always a great moment when the huge fans are switched on for the first time, and everyone in the project waits with bated breath to hear the first engine sounds coming from the tunnel.” The Head of Utility Engineering joined Basler & Hofmann in 2017.
Working with my interdisciplinary project team to find a feasible technical solution that fulfils the set objectives and overseeing the entire process of its implementation until commissioning, when the first measurements and recordings from the control and guidance systems show how well we achieved these objectives.

I was interested in becoming a civil engineer from an early age, especially for engineering structures such as bridges, avalanche galleries, caverns and tunnels. I imagine it is quite an interesting challenge to plan structures that are intended to be purely functional and fit into the landscape rather than standing out.

Today, in view of his standing as a leading expert, his services as an overall project manager are in demand when it comes to complex motorway projects and projects involving urban civil engineering.
I am fascinated by the interaction between all the parties involved in large-scale projects with 30 or more internal and external members. I find it particularly rewarding to lead and guide this process across all stages of the problem-solving process, especially in the very early project phases.

For many years now, Beat Hodel has been supervising complex infrastructure projects in his role as an environmental expert, devising solutions aimed at ensuring that environmental concerns are taken into account in all phases of planning and implementation. After studying Biology, he gained a doctorate in Toxicology from the Institute of Toxicology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), and has worked at Basler & Hofmann since 1990, where he currently occupies the role of leading expert. The highlights of his professional career so far have included environmental mandates for the tourist resort in Andermatt and the spectacular Tamina bridge in Pfäfers, canton of St. Gallen. He found the implementation of the Zurich cross-city link particularly challenging, as the new underground railway station and the tunnel needed to be constructed under highly complex groundwater conditions.
The fact that environmental concerns have increased in significance over the years, and are now receiving appropriate recognition.

Together with her team, she is the point of contact for all questions relating to Human Resources as well as any staff concerns. Kathrin Huber’s work at Basler & Hofmann encompasses all aspects of Human Resources – from recruitment through employee support to employee development – and is accordingly varied. She finds it particularly rewarding to be in daily contact with people from such a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds, and also appreciates the opportunity to contribute on both a conceptual and an operational level.

I especially enjoy a project when it benefits both the company and the employees, combines familiar and new elements and enables me to be part of the implementation from both a conceptual and a practical perspective.
For a long time, I thought of becoming a paediatrician because of the way it combines medicine and contact with children. They are spontaneous and honest, live in the “here and now” and radiate optimism and vitality, even in difficult situations.

Alongside his responsibilities as a project manager in civil and bridge engineering, he is therefore also a leading figure in numerous innovation projects which focus on the digital transformation of planning and construction procedures. This is now the second time he holds a position at Basler & Hofmann. The first time round, he joined immediately following his graduation and gained five years’ work experience as project engineer, site manager and project manager before moving to Australia. He returned to Basler & Hofmann in 2016, bringing back with him the extensive knowledge he acquired during the many years he worked as a senior engineer for an international engineering office in Brisbane. He had particularly focused on building information modelling and digital design.

As soon as he joined Basler & Hofmann in 1981, Hans Müller became involved in very large-scale infrastructure projects. Whether railway, road or airport construction, his planning expertise in the area of transport infrastructure systems was always in demand. For the Zurich suburban railway (S-Bahn) system, the civil engineer planned the renewal of tram tracks, pavements and roads, and was jointly responsible for railway systems and route constructions. At the northern approach to the Gotthard Base Tunnel, he was involved in the planning of the railway track system and of cantonal and municipal roads in need of modification or renewal as a result of the new railway line. At Zurich Airport, Hans Müller was sub-project manager with responsibility for taxiways and aprons in the context of various runway renovations.
I find it fascinating that I can work on all project phases and still gain new experience in railway, road and airport construction, for example with regard to surfacing formulations, stabilisations and in concrete construction.

A constant flow of new challenges is a great motivator. In the airport project, for example, the challenges include the high-pressure gas pipe near the construction site, aviation-related demands on the runway extension, the diversion of the Glatt river and a ten-metre-high embankment.

Jan Reifler joined Basler & Hofmann's structural engineering department immediately after completing his studies in civil engineering at ETH Zurich. He enjoys working in different cultural and linguistic contexts. For example, as a senior engineer for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Haiti, he oversaw reconstruction projects following the severe earthquake in 2010 and as project manager developed the concept for the earthquake-proofing of the Swiss Embassy in Kathmandu. Since 2020, Jan Reifler has been a leading expert and member of the divisional management of building construction and industrial construction. He has led the project planning of various complex, interdisciplinary projects such as the extension of Lausanne railway station, the renewal of listed maintenance facilities of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) or the structural design of the replacement buildings of Basler Versicherung at Aeschengraben in Basel. In order to deepen the business management aspects of his work, he has been training as an industrial engineer since 2015.
Standing in front of a completed building and thinking back, how it all began with an idea and a few pencil strokes, is always fascinating. We do a lot of thinking, but the results of our work are always tangible in the end.

Having completed his studies, he returned to the firm where he had originally trained in order to work on process optimisation in the technical chemical laboratory. From 2000, he moved into chemical and pharmaceutical engineering, planning a wide range of multi-purpose chemical facilities. From 2003 to 2005, he ran the laboratory of a manufacturer of 3-D powder mixers in the area of Research and Development. Since 2005, Andreas Rotzler has been working as a project manager at Basler & Hofmann, and manages projects in the areas of environmental technology, fuel depots, petrol stations, renovations, fire protection and risk analysis.
Our assignments and the client environment are extremely diverse and challenging. No project is like any other, and not only specialist knowledge but also creativity and adaptability are required in order for us to achieve our goals.

I find myself particularly drawn to projects that are not run-of-the-mill, whether due to special framework conditions, tight schedules or difficult interfaces. When such a project can then be handled and implemented successfully by a great team, then this makes the process all the more rewarding.

Niccolà Schaub’s work as a project engineer for soil and site contamination is similar to that of a detective. In order to correctly survey the condition of a site, she combs through archives, questions eye witnesses and meticulously investigates her subjects: landfills and sites that have been contaminated as a result of accidents or industrial activities. Niccolà Schaub studied Environmental Engineering with an elective in soil protection and water management at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. After completing her master’s degree, she joined Basler & Hofmann as a project engineer in the Environmental Technology department. She continued her education while working at Basler & Hofmann, earning a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Contaminated Sites from the University of Neuchâtel (UNINE) and the University of Bern (UNIBE). She specialises in the historic and technical inspection of landfills and the development of possible options for environmental remediation. Another area of focus for her is the environmental remediation of contaminated industrial sites. Furthermore, she has been in charge of Basler & Hofmann’s radon measurement equipment, which has been accredited by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health.
In order to evaluate contaminated sites, I get to dig around in archives, see the dirt with my own eyes and smell it with my own nose out in the field, and directly talk to people on the ground. I find it incredibly exciting to compile the information I gather from all these different sources in order to create a report.
