Ulla Wingenfelder

Ulla Wingenfelder specialises in the areas of contaminated sites and building contaminants. After studying Geology and gaining a doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich’s Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems, she joined the Environment and Transport Planning department at Basler & Hofmann in 2005. Her work has included, for instance, studying the sediment deposited by the 2005 flood in the canton of Uri for contaminants and devising solutions for handling the material. In addition, she also carried out contaminated-sites analyses and developed suitable disposal concepts for the construction of the new Glattalbahn railway to Zurich Airport and the Zurich West tram. As a project manager, Ulla Wingenfelder has focused additionally on building contaminants and specialises in large-scale contaminated-sites and deconstruction projects. Here, for example, she has been involved in the demolition and excavation work on the site of the former Coop distribution centre on Pfingstweidstrasse in Zurich West.

What fascinates you about your work?

On my pollutant analysis inspections, I’m often the last person to enter a building before it is demolished. Especially on old industrial sites, I’m fascinated by the history behind these buildings, and I often discover old machines or documents that tell us about the past. It is equally fascinating to see how entire urban areas can be transformed, and how something new can be created in place of something old.

What other profession could you imagine yourself in – and why?

Archaeologist, because I have always had a passion for times long past. Or palaeontologist – who did not, as a child, dream of digging up a dinosaur?
