Jürg Matter

Jürg Matter joined Basler & Hofmann shortly after graduating from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich as a civil engineer in 1977. For the first five years, his working day was dominated by inspections of nuclear power plants. After relocating with his family for a two-year stint as a site manager in Saudi Arabia, Jürg Matter was head of Tunnels from 1999 to 2010, during which time he continuously expanded the department beyond the Swiss border. As a leading expert, he has been responsible for foreign projects since 2010. His main areas of activity are Austria, Norway and Sweden, where, thanks to its in-depth experience, Basler & Hofmann is closely involved in a range of large and complex infrastructure projects.

What fascinates you about your work?

Tunnel construction is the ultimate adventure in engineering. What counts here are experience and good teamwork between engineers, geologists, clients and contractors, as well as strong safety awareness. The various ground conditions, the size and length of the tunnel and the increasingly urban surroundings make every project a challenging, unique case.

What do you find makes a project particularly enjoyable?

The older I get, the more value I see in personal relationships with the people involved in a project. It’s always highly rewarding to succeed in creating a real sense of team spirit. When relationships between people work well, complicated technical problems are easier to solve.
