Paul Ludwig

Draughtsman in civil engineering

Head of vocational training

Paul Ludwig

Paul Ludwig is familiar with the construction sector from several different perspectives: first he trained as a draughtsman in civil engineering, then he completed a year-long placement as a foreman on a construction site. He joined Basler & Hofmann in 1984 as a draughtsman. For almost 20 years now, Paul Ludwig has been head of vocational training at Basler & Hofmann. He supervises apprentices during their training as a draughter specialising in engineering for the Swiss Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ). Even before he became an instructor, he noticed that young people would often come to him with their questions. “I still remember how it felt to be a young person, so I find it easy to put myself in their shoes,” he says. The father of three grown-up children is very open and direct with others, preferring to speak his mind. Looking beyond your own horizons, listening instead of categorising, and allowing common sense to prevail are attitudes he holds dear in his own philosophy of life, and which he passes on to his young apprentices.

What fascinates you about your work?

I find it fascinating to be able to assist in planning a structure from the very beginning, to see the outcome of those plans grow before my eyes, and then see the end result, even several years later. Working with the apprentices is an ongoing challenge for me, but it fills me with great pleasure to be able to pass on my knowledge.

What is different about working at Basler & Hofmann?

At Basler & Hofmann, I feel accepted as part of the team – despite my rough edges. My contributions towards planning a structure are taken seriously, and my experience is valued. This gives me renewed motivation every day.
