Earthquakes and nuclear power plants – one of the most challenging combinations in engineering, and Peter Rangelow’s area of expertise. The expert is a member of various committees at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and part of a global network of earthquake experts that extends from New Zealand to the Americas. He laid the groundwork for his career as an international expert early on: after studying Civil Engineering at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, he went to Japan, which has higher earthquake risks than almost any other country in the world, to complete his master’s degree and PhD as an earthquake engineer in Tokyo. Back in Germany, he worked in power plant construction at a construction corporation before becoming a project manager, expert and test engineer at an energy company, and then finally moving to a specialist service provider for nuclear power plants. In 2017, Peter Rangelow joined the structural safety team at Basler & Hofmann as a senior expert and test engineer.
What fascinates you about your work?
As an earthquake engineer, I hate to see a destroyed building. I am proud to see a structure that is still intact after a quake. Also, putting together a team, structuring the problem and making the right decisions fast.
What other profession could you imagine yourself in – and why?
Astrophysicist. I am fascinated by the countless galaxies, collapsing suns and black holes. An astrophysicist sheds light on the mysteries of space. An exciting job at the limits of our imagination.
