Biosafety Expert, Lead Auditor ISO 35001:2019

Gesche Bernhard is an expert in biosafety/biosecurity and laboratory safety, and a Lead Auditor for ISO 35001 Biorisk Management Systems. Her focus lies in supporting and reviewing the design, planning, and operation of BSL-2 to BSL-4 facilities within research and industry. She is a member of various professional organizations, like EBSA and ABSA, and a speaker at conferences and in biosafety trainings.

Following her Master’s degree in Biology (Molecular and Microbiology), Gesche Bernhard completed her PhD in basic biomedical research (FU Berlin in collaboration with Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin), initiated innovation projects, and established the 'Glykostrukturfabrik' and the 'Glykanforum'. At the CMO Lonza, she managed innovation and GMP projects, restructured biosafety at the Swiss main site, and provided consultancy to other sites. Furthermore, she acted as the EHS Single Point of Contact for new construction and renovation projects. Alongside her professional career, she completed a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Business Law, as well as a course in Corporate Governance and Management, and has continuously pursued further training in safety and compliance topics.

What fascinates you about your work?

The sheer number of different projects and clients I get to work for. Every project has its own requirements and parameters. You are right in the middle of the latest biotechnological developments.

When do you particularly enjoy a project?

When we work together as an interdisciplinary team to find pragmatic solutions to unusual problems that satisfy the client.
