Karin Derstroff

Karin Derstroff knows the traffic challenges of small communities just as well as those of international cities with millions of inhabitants. She grew up in Germany and studied Spatial and Environmental Planning at the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern. After completing her studies, Karin moved to London, where she worked for 14 years as a project manager in a planning office and in the public sector, implementing various projects in the field of urban transport planning. Her experience includes developing traffic strategies and overall traffic concepts, road space design, analysing mobility data and preparing traffic forecasts. In spring 2019, Karin moved to Switzerland with her family and joined Basler & Hofmann as a project manager and later as a specialist manager. She has been head of the Transport and Spaces division since 2026.

What fascinates you about your work?

Mobility needs are constantly changing. It’s exciting to be able to help shape them.

What other profession could you imagine and why?

Sound engineer: a profession that would combine my love of music and my interest in engineering.
