Mario Brand

BSc Civil Engineering (FH)
Project Manager

Mario Brand joined Basler & Hofmann in 2009 as a draughtsman before going on to study civil engineering at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in Winterthur. Today, he designs structural systems using reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and masonry – ranging from new builds and conversions to refurbishments. His areas of expertise include condition surveys, refurbishments, deck construction and structural solutions for challenging urban development projects. As a project manager, he is overseeing, among other things, the construction of the Erdbeergraben multi-storey car park in Basel, with 290 parking spaces directly adjacent to the SBB railway tracks, as well as the refurbishment of the Zurich North Cantonal School. In addition, he has planned residential and commercial buildings and overseen them through to completion.

What fascinates you about your work?

I’m fascinated by creating something that lasts and is visible. When I drive through the city and see buildings I’ve worked on, it feels like a little personal museum. Knowing that these structures will be used for years to come motivates me every day.

What other profession could you imagine and why?

Something creative – perhaps designing, drawing or working with my hands. I like sketching ideas, experimenting with forms and creating something that you can actually hold in your hands at the end. I enjoy combining creativity and precision.
