Bridge over the moat, St. Gallen

The new pedestrian link, the “Bridge over the Graben” in St. Gallen, connects the old town with the Unterer Rosenberg and crosses the busy cantonal road known as the “Unterer Graben”. The team comprising Basler & Hofmann, DGJ Landscapes and Nau2 won the competition with a delicate and an urban-design-sensitive design, and then implemented the project.

With a length of 100 m, the pedestrian bridge connects the old town of St. Gallen with the Unterer Rosenberg district. It leads through the protected St. Mangen Park with its valuable tree population in the immediate vicinity of the historic St. Mangen Church. In order not to impair the effect of the listed ensemble, the bridge has a very restrained appearance with a curved and filigree construction. Towards the Kantonsstrasse, it is more straightforward and has a visually closed design with raised steel side girders. The project is being planned and implemented using Building Information Modeling BIM.
