Martin Ellwanger
Head of Railways
Martin Ellwanger takes a holistic approach to railway infrastructure: a trained civil engineer, he manages projects ranging from track bed construction and permanent way to passenger flow analysis. After graduating from EPFL, he joined Basler & Hofmann in 2017 as a project engineer, initially working on the track superstructure for the Limmattalbahn—from detailed design to realization. Since then, he has been involved in numerous tram and rail projects, including the Nations–Grand-Saconnex tramway in Geneva, the Glattalbahn extension, the expansion of Zurich HB SZU, and various projects for BLS. His expertise spans from track alignment and pavement design to construction phase planning, railway engineering coordination, and overall project management. He further specialized his skills with a CAS in “Railway Technology – Permanent Way.” Since 2026, Martin Ellwanger has been leading the Railway Engineering department. It is important to him to develop solutions that serve the entire railway system in the long term.
I am fascinated by the interdisciplinary collaboration with other specialties—whether it is with colleagues at Basler & Hofmann or with external partners. Developing solutions together and successfully driving projects to completion is what motivates me.
The open-door culture and the ability to tap into the expertise of specialists from almost all technical fields whenever needed.
