The federal inventory of Switzerland's historic traffic routes

The federal inventory of Switzerland's historic traffic routes is one of a kind in this world. As a provider of a comprehensive range of services, Basler & Hofmann supports the Federal Roads Office (Fedro) in every aspect ranging from completion and expert reports to management of a geographical information system. A purely electronic federal inventory came into being for the first time on April 14th, 2010 in the form of this geographical information system.

The federal inventory of Switzerland's historic traffic routes

For around twenty years, employees of the University of Bern have recorded Switzerland's historic traffic routes in maps and systematically documented their condition and characteristics. The federal inventory contains maps and illustrated texts with detailed information on traffic routes of national importance that are worthy of protection.

Interdisciplinary expertise

Basler & Hofmann was appointed in 2003 as an external service provider to the Federal Roads Office (Fedro) to maintain and further develop the federal inventory. The WebGIS is the result of close cooperation between our experts in the fields of geography, history, communication, engineering, landscaping, planning and information technology. In addition to maps and illustrated texts, WebGIS also contains information on the course and condition of regional and local traffic routes.

Varied tasks

The federal inventory of Switzerland's historic traffic routes serves to protect, preserve and maintain historic traffic routes. The inventory also helps promote the use of historic routes for tourism. It therefore represents a significant contribution towards creating a network of attractive pathways, hiking routes and cycle paths.
