Track for the Gotthard Base Tunnel

The Gotthard Base Tunnel opened in 2016, and trains on the new line travel now at up to 250 kilometres per hour. Basler & Hofmann was responsible for the track in the two 57-kilometre-long single-track tunnel tubes and on the open access routes to the north and south of the Alps.

High availability and low life cycle costs

Slab track was to be installed in the tunnel, and ballasted track on the open lines. A total of 25 points are found on the stretch, as well as four underground track changes.

The new Alpine railway link through the Gotthard mountain is one of the central sections of the Swiss rail network, with demands on availability correspondingly high. Invitations to tender for track engineering were, therefore, based on the RAMS approach (reliability, availability, maintainability, safety), and life cycle costs (LCCs) also had a significant role to play in the evaluation of installations.
