Track renewal for the Schweizerische Südostbahn railway

The Schweizerische Südostbahn railway covers the pre-Alpine region between Lake Constance, Lake Zurich and Lake Lucerne. Over the course of the last 10 years, the tracks and substructure have been renewed successively in various stretches. The idyllically situated single-track lines represent a technical and organisational challenge.

Technically and organisationally challenging

The route of the Schweizerische Südostbahn railway covers an undulating landscape in the pre-Alpine region, resulting in a large number of bridges, tunnels and engineering structures on the stretches due for renewal, some of which are up to 100 years old. Extremely hard rock and unstable embankments  presented difficult geological framework conditions. Customised solutions were therefore developed for the substructure that meet today’s criteria for approval.

Construction site logistics was also a major issue: there are very few possibilities for accessing the railway line, which is why construction procedures and the delivery and removal of materials via neighbouring railway stations had to be planned down to the finest detail. In parallel with the flow of materials at the temporary storage and installation locations, rail replacement services for passengers also had to run smoothly. The renewal work was concentrated into five-week total closures during the school summer holidays.
