Sponge city principle: Thurgauerstrasse neighborhood park area
The new district park on Thurgauerstrasse in Zurich-Leutschenbach is a modern inner-city park that implements the principle of the sponge city. A complex drainage system consisting of above-ground and underground elements supports the natural water cycle and brings the element of water to life in the park landscape.

A lively new residential district is being built on Thurgauerstrasse in Zurich-Leutschenbach, which also includes a school building and a 12,000 square meter park. Basler & Hofmann was responsible for the drainage concept. The system follows the principles of the sponge city and supports the natural water cycle with green trough and infiltration systems, underground retention and infiltration systems and underground infiltration of roof water. The central element of the inner-city park is a naturally designed water basin that serves as an open retention volume. The open water basin contributes to evaporation, creates a wet zone and improves the microclimate.
